Zoé, a first-year Master’s student in International and Security Politics at 91¿´Æ¬Íø, shares her experience as an exchange student at the American University of Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

What was your first impression when you arrived in Kyrgyzstan?

I arrived with no real points of reference, so I was simply curious to discover what the country had to offer. The Soviet-style architecture is a little surprising at first, but what struck me most was how peaceful the city felt. I immediately loved being surrounded by mountains!

Why did you choose Kyrgyzstan for your exchange?

Like many people, I knew very little about the country and about Central Asia in general. As a student of international relations, I felt it was important to learn more about this region, and what better way to do that than by travelling there and immersing myself in the local culture? I was also very drawn to the images of wild, unspoilt nature that characterise the country.

P.S. My passion for horses also played a major role in my decision, given the important place they hold in Kyrgyz culture!

What are the classes like?

The American University of Central Asia offers a wide range of courses, allowing students to choose the subjects that interest them most. Each class lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes and takes place twice a week. This format makes classes easier to follow from start to finish. The first session of the week is usually more lecture-based, while the second is generally devoted to discussions, debates and presentations.

The university also has many facilities (a gym, cafés, study spaces, etc.) and organises numerous events, making campus life very enjoyable.

More generally, the university provides excellent support for international students. The staff in the International Office handled our visa applications, found accommodation for us, and organised several orientation days to explain how life works here. If needed, they can accompany students to medical appointments or assist with any other issues.

Did you have the opportunity to travel around Kyrgyzstan?

I was fortunate enough to explore a large part of the country as well as some neighbouring countries. Kyrgyzstan is renowned for its mountainous landscape, which offers countless outdoor activities (hiking for all levels, horse trekking, skiing, natural hot springs, etc.) in both summer and winter.

The country is also home to one of the largest mountain lakes in the world, Issyk-Kul, surrounded by highly varied scenery, including seaside resorts, canyons, national parks and snow-capped peaks. Other large lakes also provide breathtaking views, particularly the vast Son-Kul Lake, which freezes completely during winter.

In general, the continental climate is dry but highly changeable, so it is always wise to bring warm clothing, whatever the circumstances.

Why choose Kyrgyzstan for an exchange programme?

Studying in Kyrgyzstan is an opportunity to discover a new culture that remains highly accessible, particularly thanks to the hospitality of the local people. Despite the significant language barrier (unless you speak Russian), Kyrgyz people are very welcoming towards foreigners and genuinely enjoy interacting with them.

Life in Bishkek is peaceful and very affordable. Getting around is easy thanks to ride-hailing services similar to Uber, available at very low prices. Meals in restaurants typically cost around €4–5, and rent is also reasonably priced.

In addition, because the French community is relatively small, it maintains close ties with the French Embassy. The city is also very safe, including for women travelling or living alone.

Above all, Kyrgyzstan is an absolutely stunning country whose vast natural landscapes have not been significantly affected by tourism.

There are countless activities available, all easy to organise on a modest budget. It is the ideal destination for sports enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Would you generally recommend that students go on an exchange programme?

Absolutely! An exchange programme pushes you out of your comfort zone, helps build self-confidence and encourages independence. Spending an extended period in another country also allows you to immerse yourself in the culture, understand its subtleties more deeply, and gain far more from the experience. Furthermore, meeting people from different backgrounds broadens your perspective, encourages you to see many issues from a different angle, and ultimately helps you better understand yourself.

It is important to approach an exchange programme with curiosity and enthusiasm in order to make the most of the experience.
